The Awards

Introduction
The East of England Businesswoman of the Year Award was started by the Cambridge Businesswomen’s Network in 1989. The awards have since expanded and evolved to acknowledge the enormous achievements of businesswomen in the six counties of the East of England region (Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk) and so to act as an encouragement to others.

The Awards
The Businesswoman of the Year Award aims to recognise those women who work in the region as a director, partner or senior manager in a substantial private or public sector or not-for-profit organisation, and who can demonstrate significant influence on its direction and success.

The Businesswoman Entrepreneur of the Year Award is to recognise women who have set up their own business in the region and achieved appreciable growth with clear further potential.

The Young Businesswoman of the Year Award is for young women who have displayed enterprise and commerciality in starting a business in the region.

Entry criteria

  • The Businesswoman of the Year Award
    For women who are directors, partners or senior employees in a company, professional practice, the public sector or a not-for-profit organisation with turnover in excess of £1million.
  • The Businesswoman Entrepreneur of the Year Award
    Open for women who have developed their own business with turnover of £500,000 upwards. Demonstrable entrepreneurial spirit is as important as the current size of the business.
  • The Young Businesswoman of the Year Award
    For women who will be under 30 years of age on 31 December 2009 and who are now running their own business, whether established or recently launched.

Benefits for winners and finalists

  • Recognition of achievement for every finalist and for her business and staff;
  • Media coverage within the region and a commemorative video for all finalists;
  • A variety of gifts and prizes for each winner, donated by supporters of the awards;
  • Membership of the EEBW past winners’ network.

Judging process
Entries are required by 31 October 2009. The judging panel will then carefully consider every entry and select candidates for interview on 23,24 or 25 November 2009. The selected candidates will be asked to provide further information on the structure and finances of their businesses and, at that stage, they may also provide other supporting material. Each of the selected candidates will be expected to make a short presentation to the judges at interview.

Following the interviews, the finalists for each award will be chosen and they will then be visited at their places of business during the course of December 2009 and into the New Year. Finally, the judges will meet towards the end of January to select the winner of each award.

The Awards’ Dinner
All the finalists will be invited to a celebratory Awards’ Dinner, to be held on 4 February 2010 at the Radisson SAS Hotel, Stansted Airport, where the winners will be announced and the awards presented. In advance of the dinner, a video producer will visit the finalists and put together a brief film of them and their businesses for showing at the Awards’ Dinner and for incorporating into a commemorative DVD of the awards’ evening itself.
